Migrating from DropBox to OneDrive

  • 1.  Migrating from DropBox to OneDrive

We have been using DropBox for our ~15 users for about 3 years because OneDrive just wasn't up to the task back then.  In the meantime, we have been paying a rather large amount for DropBox each of those years for each of those users, while we could be using OneDrive for free (with our Office 365 TechSoup-enabled subscription).  I've begun looking into the migration process to move from DropBox to OneDrive.  I see plenty of services that purport to carry out the migration while maintaining the appropriate groups/permissions, but I'm almost afraid to ask how much it's going to cost to do such a thing and I've read some mixed reviews about timeliness, precision of the migration process, etc.

I'd like to appeal to the wisdom of the masses assembled here:  have any of you tried it?  Gotchas?  If you paid for one of the conversion utilities, any rough estimate of cost (I know that it's probably based on the number of users and gigabytes)?  If you didn't use one of the conversion utilities, how did you do it while maintaining file integrity, individual and group permissions, etc. over the DAYS that it would take to migrate all of the data?

I'm really not looking for a consultant to do it for us because we would probably spend as much for the consultant as we would spend sticking with DropBox.  Ideas?

    Thanks in advance.

I will watch this thread closely because I have a similar issue and I have started systematically just uploading folders directly from DropBox into OneDrive. It didn't even cross my mind to pay someone to do this, but it is time consuming, so I can see why there is space for services. I have some files I transferred into Dropbox that are over 15years old. The way I organized them helped with permissions and access since only a few needed total access.

Hi - this is Cameron from TechSoup. We partner with Tech Impact to deliver these kinds of projects and recommend them highly. They are a nonprofit service provider and they only serve nonprofits and public libraries. I suggest contacting them for a quote and see if it makes sense at that point for you to outsource the service or try to do it yourself. Contact them here: https://techimpact.org/our-services/

My organization has completely moved to the Office 365 platform both on-premise Exchange and file server has been retired.

I've managed the process as two different project with a software called Bittitan.  Very straightforward, not as expensive as paying for an consultant.  Also, using Bittitan has helped us to keep the meta data with all of our files that were moved from the file server to One Drive.

Here's a link to their article Dropbox to OneDrive for Business.

Let me know if you need any insights or have questions.

I don't have a good answer fr you, but you may also want to bring this up in the Tech Decision Maker's Group.    This is right up their alley.

For 12 users, it can be as little as $960. You've spent a long time in DropBox, I'd recommend another at least $500 in addition for some administrative training hours to support the transition. Happy to talk via phone or email, Good luck!
