Text to Give campaigns

    Has anyone had experience with Text to Give campaigns and if so what types of campaigns have had the most success.  Can you recommend any good vendors for setting carrier billing text to give up.

    We didn't do Text-to-Give, but we did use Text-to-Donate using MobileCause, and we had very little success. We ended up spending far more than we made, and were signed into a contract, so couldn't just stop using it.

    The way we wanted to use it was to talk with our volunteers more, and part of the problem was we didn't have the man-power to make the time to really nurture it, so my example may be bad, for that reason alone. During an emergency, it would have probably worked for us, but we found people didn't like having to take that extra step of texting, receiving a link, then having to go to the link and enter in their information to donate. We created banners, posters, and flyers to put in our volunteer lockers, but even when we had people text in the keyword, they wouldn't donate from there.

    I would be interested to hear if anyone had better luck with text-do-donate or text-to-give, and how they went about utilizing it. The tool was definitely more powerful than we were using it, so maybe that is where we missed our mark.

    Hi Everyone,

    We've worked with other nonprofits around the world on text to pledge campaigns.  Our technology, Mogli SMS, allows for automated conversations (chatbot), linking to donation platforms, automated contact creation, custom surveys, simple reporting, etc.

    Have a look and schedule an intro if it seems like what you're looking for.  We'd love to show you what we've done to support other text donation campaigns in the past.

    We also got stuck in a pricey Mobile Cause contract that didn't provide any return. We now use NationBuilder because it has most of the tools we need, and you can purchase text messages a la carte instead of being locked in.

    Hi Melissa

    I think I met you at NTC this past year where Tracey and I were in attendance representing Greater Giving and I recognized your organization name. I would love the opportunity to reach out to you and talk about how your current suite of products and how we could potentially use Online Bidding to call for donations at your event.

    The biggest thing I can think of that will be of impact, is that your guests' have already swiped their credit card upon  entry so any donations made throught that platform are guaranteed.

    ​I don't have experience with this personally, but it was something that came up in one of the sessions at NTC this year. The feedback was that these campaigns work best when there is a large event (like a hurricane, earthquake, etc.) that can then translate to a CTA for people looking to help. Downsides discussed were the cost of the texting platforms and the time delay for receiving funds. It was not recommended for a regular giving strategy or campaign.

    We introduced our DP Text platform that integrates with our DonorPerfect CRM.

    Like others have described texting a link is common to get payments promptly (as opposed to waiting for the cell carriers when texting to donate a fixed amount via your carrier like the Red Cross campaign with Haiti). By texting the donation link you also can collect the contact information.

    Aside from the urgent need campaigns with a call to action, the most effective campaigns we have seen involves an organization that added an element of gamification to the text campaign to start with donor acquisition and the necessary text opt-in. One client used it to offer a sweepstakes on a movie theater marquis and has grown that list and solicited successfully for additional income. Our tool allows you to build an interactive series of questions to collect data and engage the donor so it becomes a bit more than just an "ask".

    There have also been clients that use the tool during an event by displaying "Text Give to ####" expecting that the needle will move in the event. That has been met with mixed results and I think it has much to do with your typical audience and their comfort with mobile. The theater had a very trendy crowd.
