Disposing or donating old computer equipment

    Hi All,

I'm restarting an old discussion thread on this topic, as I believe there is likely to be new information out there. We have several old towers, monitors, and odds and ends (such as DVD burners). I would love some recommendations on companies that will pick these up for recycling in Manhattan. I'm open to any options: companies that will wipe and certificate your old equipment at cost, companies that will only pick up and recycle for free, etc.

Thanks in advance for your help!

    Best,

I'm also in NYC and run into this problem a few times a year. If the monitors are decent, I've had a lot of luck giving them away on Craigslist. I'll add instructions that I will only give them to nonprofits or schools and get a lot of responses. When I need to dispose of equipment that's harder to give away, I've used Protek Recycling. They will take and refurbish or recycle pretty much anything. They pick up your stuff for free if you have at least 10 computers, otherwise they charge a fee.

We also have used Perscholas, but for the past few years have used Urban Renewal: http://www.urbanrenewal.org/home/, free pickup and if you have hard drives they do proper clean up and certification that they did so.

We have used Green Chip for hard drive recycling/data destruction: https://www.greenchiprecycling.com/hard-drive-shredding

If any of the tech equipment is usable, I'd recommend checking with Materials for the Arts for donation: http://www.nyc.gov/html/dcla/mfta/html/home/home.shtml

I'd also suggest checking out AFTRR - The Alliance for Technology Refurbishing and Reuse.

They also have a map locator where you can see local refurbishers, some of whom may accept donations of used equipment.
    Best of luck!

They don't pick up, but you can drop off e-waste at the Lower East Side Ecology Center. They will re-use or recycle, depending on the condition of the equipment.

    Hi All,

Thanks so much for all of the great suggestions. I went with Electronic Access Foundation (https://e-access.org). They will pick up items and certificate them for free. Also, super friendly!

I will keep the other suggestions on file just in case though!
