Where to find Arts grants?

  • 1.  Where to find Arts grants?

    Posted 13 days ago
    Hello,

I have a client looking for organizations/foundations who fund arts & humanities type projects. She has completed a live-action film of an Amerindian oral story using all Amerindian actors. Is there any sort of "marketplace" for funding entities posting grant opportunities? Or does anyone have suggestions for particular organizations to look into?

Thanks for any pointers in the right direction!

    Hi Lisa:

Here are some links that may be useful. There are various types of grants for different points of a film's life cycle including funding for production, post-production, distribution and so on. I quickly noted that The Film Collaborative has an Indo-referenced film listed on their home page.

This was my undergrad field of study (I'm not mentioning how long ago that was, smile) and so I'm digging into current resources here for you.

    Hi Lisa,

Your client might contact their state arts agency. They are good resources for local/state/regional funders, service organizations, and others who might help move your clients' work forward. I'm guessing the National Endowment for the Humanities would also have a resource list, and grant opportunities on their site. Lastly, their are Regional Arts Organizations that may have ideas

The Foundation Center has a lot of resources on grant-making organizations. There is a subscription product (Foundation Directory Online) but also a fair amount of free info. It might be worth subscribing for a month or two just to do the research.

There are probably websites or organizations that have info specifically for the arts, but I'm not familiar with them myself. A lot of indie filmmakers seem to use crowdfunding sites, too.

    Hi,
In addition - check out www.neh.gov. or arts.gov.  Often state or local arts councils give artists grants for projects.  And, adobe used to do funding for video projects.

Finally, I would suggest checking out (through your local library) - the foundationcenter.org and get even more :-)

    Best,
    Brett

Lisa, she may want to investigate the Independent Television Service, they help filmmakers with funding, production, and distribution.  I've been working with them on a few projects, and it sounds like a potential fit:  itvs.org.
