Disposing or donating old servers and equipment

Our IT department asked if anyone knows of a way to donate old server equipment similar to how we handle cell phone donations were we send them to a company who is able to retrieve some money for us for them (presumably from the precious metal components)

Does anyone know of a way to scrap older server equipment for cash?

    Hi Rob,

Claremont E Recycling is a good source for recycling your equipment but I do not believe they provide cash in return.

There are about 90 non-profit refurbishers across the united states.  They take in used equipment, refurbish it and get it back out to the community at low or no cost.  The goal is to bridge the digital divide, 17% of the united states is not connected to the internet.  39% of rural America isn't connected.  These individuals can't apply for a job, research a question, check their children's grades or connect with a teacher or family.

Companies get the benefit of the sustainability of the non-profit and the tax deduction and the world gets more connected.  If you click to AFTRR.org, they have a searchable map to find one close to you.  The top 12 organizations will also handle the logistics and shipping to receive your items.

    Best of luck

We use a local company that does free pickup and provides us a certificate of destruction for our hard drives. I wish there were a greener way but we haven't found one. We also ask them to provide certificates for phones and tablets when they pick them up.
