Nonprofits and Data

last person joined: 4 days ago

This group is for those interested in learning and sharing about all things data-related for nonprofits. The Nonprofits and Data group is for people using data to serve a mission, either directly or by improving nonprofits and the nonprofit sector. That includes everything from collecting data and managing databases to analytics, data visualization and data mining. Here are some examples of topics we discuss: using data to improve organizational effectiveness, measuring impact, using data for storytelling, tools for data management and analysis, figuring out the “right” data to collect, and learning skills to help us use data better.

Using Google Analytics to track donation pages

Has anyone had experience using Google Analytics to track successful donations (either via Goals or the commerce feature) on donation paged that are built through a CRM? I'm especially interested in Allegiance and Team Approach.

    Thanks!

Sure. I've typically set up those measurements using Goals. The trick is to set the goal to a "Begins with" or "regular expression" match type. Even though the URL is dynamic and changes each time the page is built, there is a pattern to it that you can teach Google Analytics to identify, and measure goal completions based on that.

Be in touch if you need any help., we've done this many times.

    Michelle,

We would recommend deploying ecommerce. This requires writing JS site side to fire on submit or fire on the confirmation page to then pass along transaction data.  We are happy to help you through this if you have questions!

Thanks for these great responses. I'd actually like to hear from someone who has implemented GA tracking (preferably ecommerce, but goals works to) on a donation transaction page that uses the Allegiance or Team Approach CRM.

We're trying to create an implementation strategy for our member stations, most of which use one of these CRMs and their transaction page functions. I'd really like to get a sense of how easy the implementation was in conjunction with these two systems (i.e. do we have to pay for the host company to implement GA tracking? do they support ecommerce, or only goal? etc.)

Hey Michelle, I think there might be a missing piece of information that we'd need to answer the question - are your stations also using Sphere? Team Approach and Allegiance don't create and serve public web pages for transations and donations. Sphere is likely the system that is actually serving the transaction pages online, and that's where the Google Analytics integration needs to be done. You can see basic instructions here:

Add a Google Analytics code snippet to a Web site

Add a Google Analytics code snippet to a Web site
Sphere How-To Page Use this procedure to add a Google Analytics code snippet to a Thon or CMS Web site. For a Thon site, you can also access URL information to configure destination goals and funnels in your Google Analytics account and monitor whether website users complete actions on your event website.

However, Sphere is notorious for not working with GA well at all: Google Analytics is broken on Blackbaud Sphere -- help fix it

Google is passing around a survey asking nonprofit users for their experiences trying to use Google Analytics with Blackbaud Sphere. Go here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dFRGOUJfQnlJTVlkNmtPaHlCMVFOTkE6MQ Some background here... Not only is Blackbaud terribad at doing ecommerce transaction tracking. It's also pretty horrible at conversion funnels.

Isaac, does your offer of help still stand? I am stuck on this very issue while trying to track ticket-buyers using analytics in DonorPerfect.

    Goals, baby!

    Step 1

Get the G.A. tracking code into your CRM pages.

You can usually either add it yourself to the wrapper OR have your vendor add it to your wrapper.

Note: You can also sometimes do it the jenky way and add the tracking code via whatever editor you use to edit the form. It's not the best approach, but sometimes an #nptech girl has to do what an #nptech girl has to do.

    Step 2

Set up a goal in G.A.

Configuration varies based on your specific provider and the URL parameters they use.

Ideal situation is to have a specific "thank you" page where you send all donors.

    Step 3

Obsessively check G.A. because data is somewhat addicting. ;)

If you're reading this and you don't feel fully comfortable with Google Analytics...

Thanks Yesenia...it appears your approach will work regardless of the CRM. Right?
