This group is for those interested in learning and sharing about all things data-related for nonprofits. The Nonprofits and Data group is for people using data to serve a mission, either directly or by improving nonprofits and the nonprofit sector. That includes everything from collecting data and managing databases to analytics, data visualization and data mining. Here are some examples of topics we discuss: using data to improve organizational effectiveness, measuring impact, using data for storytelling, tools for data management and analysis, figuring out the “right” data to collect, and learning skills to help us use data better.

    As a new Salesforce admin, our implementation partner strongly recommended that we take advantage of a donation program to get a free license for a utility called DemandTools. Their donation program was remarkably generous, providing ten free licenses to c3 nonprofits (retail price for which is $5,000 annually). I subsequently discovered that tool to be invaluable when the time came to start doing serious deduplication work on our customer data imported from numerous sources.

    Sadly, the company which acquired the maker of DemandTools several months ago announced this week that they are ending that donation program and replacing it with a 20% nonprofit discount. And there's some additional nuance to the licensing model which threatens to price this tool out of reach for many nonprofits, even with the discount program.

    There's an open letter to the company going around to address this situation and petition them to keep this valuable tool within reach for many organizations. Please consider taking a minute to read the letter at that link and add your name to the bottom of it if you agree.

    Thanks for this note, @Jason Samuels! I was just starting to really get the hang of the Demand Tools de-dupe functionality, and now I'll need to find something else to use. I hope this letter reaches more than just deaf ears at the company.

    Does anyone have any (free/cheap?) tools they would recommend to clean Salesforce data that might take the place of Demand Tools?

    Did you all happen to see the update that Validity sent on August 3rd?

    Recently, Validity implemented changes to our Not-For-Profit (NFP) grant program which has donated over $65 million to the NFP community over the last 15 years. We're proud of the many thousands of organizations we've helped obtain data quality and compliance through our solutions. However, as we have embarked upon a large investment in furthering our technology and platform, we chose to stop issuing new grants for our core products.

    Over the last few weeks, many of you in the NFP community have reached out to share how important our platform is for your organizations and we have been studying this feedback – thank you to all of you who have reached out to share your stories. We understand how challenging it is for smaller NFPs to try and hold budgets together with a shoe-string and we certainly do not want to add to that burden. So, I am announcing today that we are modifying our wide-reaching NFP program in a fashion that will serve the vast majority of NFP organizations that serve with generous hearts.

    The New Validity NFP Grant Program

    In studying the NFP landscape, we see that a majority of organizations in the United States are modest in size, with under $250,000 in assets. We have spoken with many of the people involved in these organizations and see how tirelessly you are working to serve your communities, often with little support. For all of you in this community – thank you for the work that you do, and we will continue to issue grants to enable you to use DemandTools for free. We estimate the value of these grants to just those small NFPs currently using the Validity platform today to be over $5 million per year, though we understand that our donation could grow substantially if the rest of the small NFP community seeks grants and desires to benefit from DemandTools. That's ok – we're big believers in the work that you are doing, and we are happy to help.

    To qualify for the new Validity NFP grant program:

    1. Organizations must have end of year assets under $250,000 (found on line 20 of your form 990).

    2. You must submit your organization's 990 (or equivalent for international organizations) to Validity when requesting a grant.

    Furthermore, we will continue offering relief to those NFP organizations that are too big for our grant program:

    1. We will continue to offer a 20% discount off many of Validity's products.

    2. For those that have missed their budget cycle, we are happy to work with you. Give us a call and we will figure out, together, a fair approach to contracting.

    3. Any NFP that contracts before Dreamforce 2018 will receive an additional 10% discount (30% total discount).

    4. If you're not currently up for renewal, you don't need to do anything at this time.

    Thanks Jason Samuels.   DemandTools is such a wonderful tool set and they have done so much by offering their tools and training in the past.   I hope this can be worked out amicably.

    Cycling back to this, we've begun using Apsona's Dedupe and Match tool. I never thought I'd miss DemandTools' interface and yet now I do. Aside from that, there are a couple of ways in which this tool offers greater flexibility and different ways of identifying duplicate records, as well as some ways in which it's less sophisticated. In short, it's just different but still gets the job done. And it costs almost 90% less than the discounted NFP rate we were quoted for DemandTools last year (Apsona is $495/year for 3 users vs. Validity's 20% discount on their retail price for up to 100 users).

    We went with Apsona too and so far we're pleased with it for importing and deduping contacts. I like being able to work inside Salesforce and clean up the data without having to re-import the csv.

    The Validity rep gave us a discounted rate and then lowered it when I said we were choosing another product. Apsona was still much cheaper ($375 for 3 admins) vs $4k+.

    I second (or third?) all the positive comments about Apsona here.

    I have set up Apsona de-dupe tool at one of my client organizations and have evaluated it extensively before doing so, and I like it. According to the client, they performed a massive de-dupe operation, and Apsona helped speed up the process by orders of magnitude. The organization was planning to recruit an intern at hourly rate to do this job earlier, but the team completed it in couple of weeks. They were extremely excited about what the tool does.

    I also like the fact that Apsona is a product under active development, and in my experience, the company has been very welcoming to all feedback regarding bugs, as well as to add features to the product (and quickly), if the use case is valid and therefore there is a strong business justification. They have an active forum on Salesforce Hub where the response to questions is prompt.

    The downside is that there's a learning curve in learning Apsona overall, since the tool runs off basic Apsona tool, however, it's well worth investing time in learning it, especially for those who are in Salesforce world.

    Frankly, by obfuscating pricing as they did earlier, Demandtools just lost a segment of the market to Apsona. May be it was intentional, but oh well.
