This week is National Hunger & Homelessness Awareness week. One of the issues listed on the website for the National Coalition for the Homeless is Employment and Income.

    It states the following:

    - Lack of access to technology serves as a disadvantage for homeless individuals searching for work
    - Some knowledge of computers and technology is essential for every field

Has anyone taught digital literacy skills to the homeless or helped them get access to technology? What was your experience like?

Does anyone know of any success stories about homeless people learning technology?

    Good morning!

You might like to visit with Emily Plunkett, Program Manager for Austin Free-Net's pioneering program, ACCELERATE. Follow that link to a list of Austin Free-Net programs. For homeless community members, you might enjoy reading this page:

"For people experiencing homelessness: We offer special programming to address the needs of people experiencing homelessness at the Austin Resource Center for the Homeless (ARCH) and Trinity Center in downtown Austin. Our computer lab at ARCH is open 37 hours a week with staff ready to help. The Getting it Done Program at ARCH on Monday and Thursday mornings and Friday program at Trinity Center are great places to get focused attention to work on self-sufficiency tasks."

I have worked with AFN's executive director, Juanita Budd, on grant applications and I can tell you without hesitation she is doing amazing work in low-income communities in Central Texas. Some of what AFN is accomplishing could be replicated elsewhere.
