Hi! I'm Julia, a first year masters student in the School of Information at the University of Michigan.

I am working on a project to redesign education of digital literacy for formerly incarcerated individuals. My team is narrowing down our scope right now, and we're seeking the insights of those who have worked with this population.

If you have anything to share, please let me know! Any information will be valuable and help us work towards our goal. My email is dinotoju@umich.edu if you'd like to contact me directly.

    Thanks in advance! :)

    Hi Julia,
What an interesting project, I hope you'll be able to share the curriculum once you've worked on it.
I believe @Necole Durham may have worked with incarcerated individuals, as well as @James Butts.  Perhaps they can share their experiences with you.
    Good luck!

    Hi Julia,

I was part of a research team at Portland State University that did technology training in the Orleans Parish Prison reentry program. The team conducted interviews with participants as part of a larger study of adult digital literacy acquisition. The work was recently referenced in Slate magazine, and there are a number of related publications on the LLTR research archive page. There is at lease one specifically about digital literacy in a corrections setting. I'm no longer at PSU but would be happy to connect you with the folks still on that team if you wanted to talk with them.

    Drew,

I would love to speak with the people on the PSU team! I'm actually part of a re-entry org myself, so I know that they will have good insights on this subject.

    Thanks so much!

A while back, I heard a data specialist speak about his work with Roca. I thought you might like to reach out to them. It was a truly amazing talk about how he manages data. Evidently, several staff members of Roca are former clients.

"Roca has been privileged to meet thousands of young people since 1988. We have learned so much from each one of them. They have grown, developed and changed, and so has Roca. Roca's mission is to disrupt the cycle of incarceration and poverty by helping young people transform their lives."

    Best wishes!

Sounds like an interesting project. I've worked with this population for 20yrs providing job readiness, job coaching & development, and now entrepreneurship. If you still need some insights, I would be happy to share.
