Private operating foundation?

Hi NTENers!  I'm the new managing director of technology for a weird breed of nonprofit-- a private operating foundation.  Any other participants from this world?  Would love to get together and pick your brain!

I'm not at a foundation but I'm intrigued by NEFE ... I referred a colleague who develops curriculum programming for incarcerated adult re-entry programs. Do you think that kind of program would be a good match for what NEFE provides? If so, can you refer me to anyone at NEFE who would like to meet with my colleague about it?

I don't work at one anymore, but I used to, and I've consulted for a couple. I love these odd nonprofit forms, there's almost always a great story behind them. Would be happy to meet up!

Excellent!  Sounds like we have enough for a small "Birds of a Feather" table - maybe at Wednesday lunch?  I'll print up a sign ("Private Operating Foundations") and will message each of you on the NTEN app to let you know where we've set up for lunch.  Sound good?

I would love to join this conversation as well! Our Trust is in the process of taking on more programming (in addition to our grantmaking) and I would love to see how that works at other foundations.

    Take care,

    Annette,

I work for another "odd duck" in the non-profit world, the Community Foundation.

From what I know, we have some similar structures and processes.

I'm also looking to form a BoaF table at NTC 19 and would love to meet up as well. Our application is still in process but I will definitely stop by and touch base. I have some specific questions as to technology use that I'm hoping to address over the three days and I think our worlds cross enough to help each other.

Plus its always great to meet people in similar circumstances.

    See you there,

I've created a Google Doc (let me know if there's some other NTEN process I'm supposed to use!) for us to list potential discussion items:
Private Operating Foundation Discussion Items.  Note that this doc is open to all, so no private info should be included.  Feel free to add any discussion items you'd like!!

If there's room I'd love to join. Little late to this thread but excited to see birds of a feather. The Murdock Trust is a private foundation in Vancouver Washington just right across the river from Portland.

At the lunch, we talked about organizations geared to operating foundations. There is one I forgot about: Grantmakers for Effective Organizations (GEO). They have an email list that you can join, but I am not 100% sure if your organization has to be a member.

Actually, I can re-mention the foundation-specific networks we had mentioned during the lunch for anyone that missed it. And I looked through the memberships my organization has, turns out we are part of a bunch of groups. None of them are the exact niche of operating foundation and technology, but may be helpful networks to look at or pass along.

If anyone wants more detail about the groups, I can connect you with the employees at my org who use them.
