Subject: Is there a need for a Google Adgrants forum?

1.  Is there a need for a Google Adgrants forum?

Posted Jan 14, 2017 01:23
NTEN friends,
After managing a Google Adgrants account for almost a year, I think there is a need for a special forum dedicated to this topic. I think that such a forum can support the need of NGOs to make better use of the monthly ($10,000) budget donation.
I would be happy to get more opinions on the matter.
Sincerely,
Ben Carp

Hi Ben,

We've danced around with the idea of doing Google Adwords, and did get a grant several years ago but just didn't have the time to invest. I think a forum would be very helpful.

I like the idea and would join such a group. Meanwhile...

Google have a Google Ad Grants forum but most of the posts are about the application process, not using the grant. It's a useful resource if you're having problems getting started, because Google staff are on hand.

They have other forums for Google AdWords generally.

I also think this a great idea. My org secured a Google Ad Grant this month. My main priority is to get to a point where we're spending the entirety of our monthly credit as soon as possible. I think a lot of nonprofits fail to even get that far.

This thread is awesome. I see the start of answers to the proposal questions for starting a new NTEN group. (See below.)

I'm curious if focusing on a specific suite of tools may be too narrow--would it make more sense for it to be focused on digital advertising in general? Keep chatting about it! I'm excited to help you make it happen.

  1. Proposed group name/topic:

  2. Purpose: What is the need? What challenges will this group tackle?

  3. Audience: Who is the target group member?

  4. Content: What types of conversations will likely take place in this group?

  5. Existing alternatives: What similar groups/resources already exist?

  6. Unique value proposition: How will this group differ from existing offerings?

I like the idea of expanding to digital advertising in general. There are so many important conversations to have about developing strategy, testing, controlling where display ads appear, avoiding click-bots, etc. I would hope that a lot of threads would still be specific to AdWords, though, since so many nonprofits have AdWords grants and don't know how to maximize them.

Hi everyone,
Thanks for all the responses!
I will try to answer some of Bethany's questions, but others might be more experienced and equipped than me
Purpose: What is the need? What challenges will this group tackleI think that due to certain limitations (such as the 2$ bid) Adgrants is a realtively unique kind of SEM, and it is quite difficult to take advantage of it. The Ad quality score has to be high in order for ads to show. I think the forum would be used to discuss best practices.
Content: What types of conversations will likely take place in this group?
Here are a few conversations I think can take place.
  • What to expect - what can the grant be used for.
  • The right approach towards building campaigns (the ads should give value not only for the NGO, but for the end user as well).
  • Should we create special pages build for relevant keywords?
  • (for NGOs) Adwords or Adwords express? Should we manage it by ourselves or outsource?
Existing alternatives: What similar groups/resources already exist?
Unfortunately I did not find similar groups.

I'm with @Judy on this one, any such group should be for digital advertising and marketing generally, not just a single company's tool (even though it's such a popular and useful one).

@Ben - each of the types of conversation you listed could also apply to other tools and techniques, like Twitter or Facebook ads.

I would love to join as well! We just secured our Google AdWords grant and I have done some set up but I think there is always room for improvement.

Hi all,

It sounds like there's lots of interest in a digital advertising forum (which would include convos on Google ads grants).

Ben did a great job of helping rally some folks together. Who wants to help continue building the group concept and kick it off?

Here's some general info about starting new online groups: http://www.nten.org/community/online-groups/about/. Feel free to contact me directly with questions.

Would be interested to know too. Any likelihood of this happening?

Would be really useful to have a digital advertising forum (Google Grant, FB, Twitter, Bing, LinkedIn etc).

I'd volunteer to run it myself, but already helping run another forum.

I'm also interested. Should the discussion board relate to digital strategy more broadly?

My organization is engaging more deeply with Adwords, Google Tag Manager, Google Optimize, and even has a bold goal to create at least one predictive data model using Microsoft Power BI and machine learning by the end of the calendar year. Would love to connect with others about those kind of efforts.
