Creating a Tech Map

Does anyone have experience building Tech Maps? Specifically I am looking to display the various data resources we use, both locally and cloud based. How staff access these resources, what is the workflow from one resource to the other, how they integrate or not integrate and so on.

Yes, we build maps of this sort as part of many of our engagements. We usually distinguish between network resource maps or network topologies (the map of all physical network resources like servers and printers) and dataflow maps. The former are very useful for IT specifically, and there are tools out there that will sniff your network and help you automatically generate and maintain these maps.

Dataflow diagrams, on the other hand, seek to map out how data moves from system to system, and whether those processes are automated, manual, etc. If you'd like to talk about this directly, you can book a time with me at https://www.calendly.com/sage70/30min

    Hey Richard,

There was at least one session at NTC 19 about mapping a digital ecosystem. Here is a link to the notes: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1yTitfBLlibQvSrwsfKEbiHC4dUZjWG6BnoD9Z2FN8ag/edit

    Hope it's helpful

    Hi Rick,

I've used Microsoft Visio and PowerPoint to make tech ecosystem maps and data flow diagrams.  PowerPoint for high-level summaries for executives and non-tech people, and Visio for more detailed diagrams for me and my team.  In PP I like to use SmartArt as a base and convert to shapes for more details or customized arrangements. Feel free to message me if you have specific questions about this approach.

    Best,
    Lauren
