Hello everyone! A couple of weeks ago, I tried setting up Simple Page Tester on my WordPress site. I'm using WordPress 4.5.3, and my host is WPEngine.
After setting up my first test, the plugin started creating redirect loops for both the A and B page. The redirect loop didn't happen for anyone logged into WordPress, but anyone else who visited the site got the "too many redirects" error. I read that the Simple Page Tester plugin needs PHP sessions to work right, and the developer recommended installing "WP Session Manager." I installed that, and the problem continued.
WP Session Manager is years out of date, so I was considering attempting a different PHP plugin, like "Native PHP Sessions for WordPress", but before I did I thought I'd see if anyone in the group had any experience with this plugin or this issue before.
If it matters, my site has an SSL certificate. It's https://businessadvising.org/
Thanks in advance!
Thanks Cindy! Yeah, I did that over the course of a day, and there were no conflicts found. That was the first thing I did, actually, before I started experimenting with PHP Sessions.
WP Engine is a great host (I use them with a lot of clients), but they are much stricter with their servers than a lot of other hosts in terms of restrictions and specific configurations. I'm not familiar with PHP sessions or this plugin, but I would get in touch with WP Engine's support as this may be a server configuration issue.
Luckily, that plugin isn't on their list of disallowed plugins, so hopefully they can help you get it working or definitively tell you that it won't work on their hosting :(
Thanks Mark! yeah, I called WpEngine about it when it first happened, but since it's a plugin they were pretty clear that they didn't support it. They also suggested I disable every other plugin to search for a conflict, which I did over the course of a day, and there were no conflicts found.
Best place to get advice is on the support forum for that plugin: https://wordpress.org/support/plugin/simple-page-tester. The plugin's author seems to be quite responsive to questions. I notice there are other people having problems with redirects.
Thanks for the suggestion. I'd already tried posting on that forum a while back, and that's where the suggestion to use Session Manager came from. Then, I implemented it and didn't work. You need to pay for the premium version of the plugin to get real troubleshooting advice, and our website budget is shoestring.
The fact that you tried another plugin and had the same issue leads me to believe it's not the plugin. I've had other issues with redirects and https with WPEngine, though never used these plugins. In my cases, changing the site URL and home in Settings > General to reflect the https resolved my redirect issues as http to https is a redirect. Maybe worth a try for you? BTW, if your URLs are grayed out, you can change in the wp-config file or ask WPE to do it. This is a something they will support.

Sara, troubleshooting from afar is always hard, but I love your suggestion. It makes a ton of sense, and I'll try to keep it in mind, even if it isn't the solution Patrick's problem :)
