WordPress at the Nonprofit Technology Conference in Washington, 2017

At this year's NTC last month the WordPress Salon was a whole day of sessions about WordPress, hosted by Cornershop Creative. Here are slides for the nine sessions at the WordPress Salon.

My own favourite was Holy Wow! That's WordPress?! which looked at examples of WordPress in the wild, used in ways you might not expect: big traffic sites, beautiful design, the Facebook blog, complex content structures, community sites. And Beyonce.

Each day at lunch, we had a Birds of a Feather table for our WordPress community, thanks to everyone who came along and especial thanks to Gretchen for hosting it on the Thursday.

Apart from the WordPress sessions, there were other website talks that might interest you, for example: Your website: when to iterate and when to overhaul. If you would like to share your takeaways from the conference, please post on our WordPress forum.

WordCamps and hackathons

Is there an upcoming WordCamp near you? Find out on WordCamp Central.

do_action hackathons are community-organised events using WordPress to give charities an online presence. Participants from the local WordPress community come together to plan and build brand new websites in one day. There are do_action WordPress hackathons planned in July 2017 for Beirut, Cape Town and Pretoria. Want to run your own local event? Read the Organizers' Handbook.

At WordCamp Manchester, Glyn Thomas spoke about how charities he's worked with - ShareAction, Positive Money and Refugee Action - have recruited supporters and encouraged them to take part in campaigns and make donations, using their WordPress websites. Watch the video on WordPress.tv.

Would you like to help co-organize this forum?

NTEN's long-time volunteer organizer for the WordPress group, Cindy Leonard, is retiring from her post. We're looking for someone to step up in the next few weeks to join the volunteer team with Mark Root-Wiley and Jason King. Ideally this new volunteer will work at a non-profit. The average time commitment is between 2-4 hours per month.

Named and famed

Aaron Tebrinke, the spotlight's on you this month. Aaron works in the Communications Department for the Dominican Sisters of Springfield, IL. He's in the beginning stages of a monumental re-branding and website re-design. Divi was chosen as the theme because of its Visual Builder option, something Aaron has mixed feelings about.

Aaron isn't the only person in our forums getting to grips with page builders. Cindy Leonard shouted about her win using Visual Composer.

Downward curve?

Carolyn Woodard has using WPCurve for a couple of years for maintenance, security, and updates, and for changes/problems that are too big to fix on her own. But WPCurve has been acquired by GoDaddy and she found the transition was unprofessional. Can you recommend an alternative service?

What do you think of the recent plugin repository design? See the announcement on the official blog for the plugin review team, then whinge about it in the comments section. Fortunately the new Twenty Seventeen theme has been more uniformly welcomed.

Flexbox Froggy

Thank you, Jason, for preparing the Shiny Updates!

We are in the planning stages of a do_actioin in Fort Myers, Florida. We already have the venue, now we need nonprofits to signup, as well as developers/designers and project managers. And look for a date. I am totally excited!

Keep up the excellent work!
PS: It was good to see you at #17NTC!

Was good to see you too. Great to hear about the do_action. When you're ready, please post the event's details on this forum and a call for people and organizations to be involved.
