    Hello all

We are aiming to revamp the "Where We Work" section of our Wordpress website this year. Right now what we have is pretty plain -- a static map graphic with a list of countries below. https://www.r4d.org/about/where-we-work/

We would like to turn this map into a more dynamic display that shows not just countries that our organization works in, but also different types of projects and levels of engagement we have in each country.

I am seeking examples from the NTEN community of interactive world map designs that you like or from your organization (it can be from any sector. The examples do not have to be from a nonprofit). Bonus points for examples in Wordpress, and for examples that relate closely to what we are looking to do (map of countries where an organization works and projects/engagement).

    Thanks

    Hi,
I have had good results with both Google maps and ArcGIS Story maps.

Here is a google map with data about the organizations projects that slides in when locations are clicked embedded on a WordPress site using the google embed iFrame code. Google has changed some things about their maps since this was created I believe so you'll have to google for how to.

And this is an example of what you can do with Story Maps (https://storymaps.arcgis.com). It can do a lot more too and is free. The map needs to be public though.
This is also a WordPress site with a code embed from the map site.

For both of these I needed to make a spreadsheet of all the data and import it. Not hugely difficult or technical but takes time.

    hope this is helpful,
    heather

    Hi,
The second is one of my favorites for a global perspective.
https://www.worldtheatremap.org/en. I have used ESRI and Google, too.

    Hi Redante,

Our company has used Carto for clients several times with good results. It's not trivial to set up though, it is a bit more technical but it's a very powerful tool and you can embed the resulting maps in whatever website you have. There's great control over how the map displays and what behavior it has as the user interacts with it.

Here's an example of one we did that is in fact within wordpress:

Let me know if you want more details and I can try to collect some info or connect you with our developer who's most familiar with this technology.

    Thanks!

    Martin

    Redante,

    You might also check-out https://www.wpgmaps.com/

I don't have a live example as the site is still in dev. And I see others have shared some stellar examples. Still might be worth a look, though, depending on your specific need. :)

Be sure to share your final result! I would love to see the before and after.

    Thank you!

We love building interactive maps! We usually lean on Google Maps and their map visualization, but have also had a few projects where we introduced our own design layer. Sometimes these maps are fairly static, and are managed wholly through the Google Maps interface, but sometimes, we have also created maps where the pins are the result of a WordPress custom content type, so that every time someone adds a new item in that custom content type, a new pin is added to the map:
    I hope this is helpful!

Thanks to everyone who responded with excellent examples! I am thrilled to see the creative and great examples that people have given. These are a great source of inspiration for what we are trying to do.
