I like Bonnie's idea about introductions, so I moved this to a new thread so it will be easier to look at intros. Bonnie's intro and post is pasted below.

Please introduce yourself to the group!

Subject: Group Survey

Hi, everyone. I just want to introduce myself and say that I am excited to be co-facilitating this group with Emily. I think it's a good idea to change the name of the group and broaden its focus to include the whole range of digital communications that nonprofits engage in, not just blogging.

Below is a thumbnail bio for me, just so you have an idea of my background. I think it would be great if each of the group members who are currently active would post a brief bio so that we can get to know one another a bit better. Not only can we share ideas and experience here, but perhaps we can help one another in job searches and related professional endeavors.

I wanted to mention again how excited I am about the future of this group. I am glad so many of you are interested in these changes. I am really looking forward to seeing how this group grows!

Here is more about me-

I have been involved with nonprofit technology for about 9 years. My blog, The Nonprofit Blog Exchange, is a resource for nonprofits where I write monthly roundups linking to nonprofit blog articles. I also write about nonprofits and social media in my other blog, Emily's World. I enjoy researching, writing, web content management, and data management.

I would love to hear more introductions from members of this group!

I'm here because my job duties changed dramatically around the beginning of 2014. I'm managing our CRM (along with others in IT - I do the organizational/segmentation/reporting/email integration stuff, they do the heavy lifting/programming), our email marketing, and our AdWords campaigns, as well as providing guidance for our new Content Strategy Working Group.

I'm spread pretty thin, but the Content Strategy is the part I like the best, so I'm here to learn and share ideas, tactics, knowledge, etc.

Hi all,

I'm a content strategy consultant specializing in working with associations and nonprofit organizations. I end up thinking and talking a lot about the people side of content strategy -- executive buy-in, governance, roles, policies and procedures, etc. -- in addition to the content creation, management, and promotion.

Looking forward to connecting more with everyone here!

Great idea, Laura. I'm a bit like you. My job has evolved from senior editor to digital content manager, with a few weird hybrid positions along the way. I manage web content, social media, our online community, and other content. We have 12,000 members, but we have a very small staff, so we're just beginning to get serious about analytics and other quantitative measures of how we're doing. I'm more or less creating that capacity along with my position.

I'd enjoy hearing more about your content strategy work group, Laura. Do you think we'd have enough interest on NTEN to start a group for content strategists?

Thanks for sharing.

Hi everyone!

I'm relatively new here and excited to be a part of this growing group. I'm on the funder side of the nonprofit world, working for a foundation that works to improve life for Detroit's kids. I've been here for two years as communications officer, and my role encompasses a little of everything. We have a two-person communication department. I have a heavy hand in our social media, blog, web site and email marketing. Before this, I was a reporter and editor at the Detroit Free Press for nine years.

Looking forward to future conversations and collaborations!

Laura, thank you for getting the introductions going!

For those interested in content strategy, that topic is part of this group's discussion! There is no need to create a new group. In fact, content strategy was a topic people listed in the survey! Feel free to suggest topics related to content strategy in the topic list in the document at http://bit.ly/npdigitalcomm-notes and we can have a future call related to content strategy.  Also you can start your own discussions in the group about topics that interest you.

Keep the introductions coming!

It's great to hear how everyone's roles have evolved!

I've been in nonprofits for 20 years, usually on the program side - but got my hands on communications when we launched a new website in 2009 and gradually migrated into communications full-time. Now I am the Communications "Department" for a national organization with a staff of 13 and work in 18 states, learning the role as I go. I manage our website, social media, bulk email, branding, print communications, and I'm the point-person for media.

Like most of you probably, I'm here to find and share strategies and tools, to learn, and to help out when I can.

Hi RoiAnn, and hi everyone!

RoiAnn, I'm replying to your post to introduce myself because I'm a fellow participant of a few of Marlene Oliveira's webinars. I was picking her brain for good conferences to attend this year, and that's how I heard about NTEN! She also knew you were attending and suggested we connect.

I am Manager of Editorial Initiatives at the International Center on Nonviolent Conflict (ICNC), a DC-based educational nonprofit which focuses on how ordinary people around the world nonviolently struggle for rights, freedom, and justice. Usually this is when people's eyes glaze over! :o)

My main projects over the past year and into the near future include:

  • Planning a blog (forthcoming in March/April)
  • Developing a curated news site (forthcoming in March)
  • Managing a former collaboration with openDemocracy.net and co-editing our civilResistance page with them
  • Managing the publication of the English translation of a groundbreaking scholarly work on the role of media in the fall of the Berlin wall and other nonviolent movements in Eastern Europe
  • Managing my organization's communications (I think you said in your intro that you ARE the communications department! Hah, I can relate to that!)

I'm looking forward to networking at this conference, and absorbing, thinking critically about, and finding ways to incorporate the content presented into my work. My organization is very small and until recently didn't really 'get out' much in terms of networking for developing our capacity. Enough with re-inventing the wheel!!

Looking forward to connecting with you, RoiAnn, and many others!

I'm Sandee, and I'm a consultant working with nonprofits and churches on marketing design and strategy. I design, develop and maintain mission-focused websites (WordPress), social media branding, and collateral material. I also provide training on content development and social media strategy. I started my career....years ago in TV news as a producer, worked for a bit in professional services marketing, then worked for local nonprofits doing marketing and PR. I love helping organizations bring their missions to life through creative story telling and strong and cohesive marketing and brand strategies.

Hi everyone,

I wanted to go ahead an introduce myself. I'm Lacey Helmig, Communications and Media Coordinator for Youth Volunteer Corps. I've been at YVC for five years now, starting as an AmeriCorps member working on the ground leading our youth service projects, and I've been in my current role for two years now.

We're a national organization, but we operate with a very lean staff, so I'm the entire marketing/communications department. I wear many hats, managing our website, blog, print and email newsletter, social media, branding and more. Since I'm a one-man department, I'm looking forward to connecting with other nonprofit communicators to share ideas.

Hi community,

Over coffee this morning, I browsed all your introductions and recognized so many familiar faces and names already, and plenty of new-to-me folks I'm looking forward to chatting with here.

I'm a marketing and communications strategist, trainer, and writer. I've been a staff member at tiny, hyperlocal nonprofits and at larger NGOs with an international audience. For the past 5 years, I've been consulting for organizations looking for strategic clarity, increased tactical capacity, or just someone with a way with words. I'm honored to count organizations among my clients like TechSoup Global and its projects NGOsource, Caravan Studios, and BetterWorld Wireless, as well as California Family Health Council and TeenSource, YTH, CompassPoint, and the David and Lucile Packard Foundation.

More and more, my work focuses on digital communications, content marketing, strategy, and emerging social media-and while my services are issue agnostic, lately I've found myself collaborating with organizations working in tech, health, women/girls, international giving, and youth. Despite my issue agnostic approach, my passions keep creeping in.

I've been a speaker at several NTCs, and am once again on the Steering Committee for the 2015 conference in Austin. I also recently joined the moderator crew at Reddit's nonprofit subreddit (http://reddit.com/r/nonprofits). If you're eager for even more discussions and resources, come check out the conversation there!

Hello everyone,

I am a manager at a Washington DC nonprofit called SeaWeb. We do ocean conservation communications, primarily around seafood sustainability. I have been receiving NTEN emails for about two years and decided I would like to get more involved.

I wear quite a few hats in my very small organization, including managing two seafood sustainability programs as well as managing our websites, media outreach, and communications (yes, we are really a VERY small organization, but mighty!) I would love to participate in discussions about communicating effectively to stakeholders and funders, new technology and best practices for using them, and results tracking with metrics and analytics.

Thank you and I look forward to learning more about the group.

Good morning,

Keeping with the group tradition, I thought I would introduce myself. I am the Marketing and Communications Specialist at the Community Foundation for Southwest Washington. Because we only have a staff of nine, that means I do everything related to internal and external communications...without a dedicated IT department.

I came to the Foundation from the world of print journalism, and this role has allowed me to increasingly exercise my skills in technology and digital communications. Last year, I launched a new website and brand. This year, I'm focusing my efforts on creating a comprehensive communications plan that incorporates content strategy and hopefully sprouts a culture of communications in our office. I'm always interested in what's new, but even more interested in what works.

Looking forward to being a part of the broader conversation.

Hi All,

Happy to be introducing myself to the group! I've been working in the digital communications field for about 8 years now, about 6 of those in the nonprofit sector (mainly in Boston).

My initial job function here at MSPCA-Angell was Web Manager, in a sort of "keep the ship afloat" capacity. In my role now, I'm the lead project manager for a site redesign, as well responsible for establishing a formal digital communications strategy in the absence of a Marketing Department.

I'm very happy to be joining the group, as I commonly look to outside sources for opportunities for development and advice. Thanks to all that facilitate, and I hope to bring as much to this forum as I get out of it.

Thanks,

A fellow Bostonian, I'm the manager of community strategy for The Global Health Delivery Project at Harvard-primarily overseeing community and content for GHDonline.org, our platform of communities of practice for health care professionals working on delivery challenges around the world.

Prior to GHD, I was working for a startup based here in Boston that focuses on empowering patients through social media. So, I've spent the last 8ish years working in health care and digital communications-it's great to see so many members here with experience in similar areas. 34.  Hi, I'm BJ, social media communicator & connector!

Posted Jul 31, 2015 23:49

Hi, all,

I've been a member of the CommBuild community for a few years but am new to this one. I joined because a few months ago my role expanded from just one program (Bookshare) to include the Benetech organization's social presence and another program, SocialCoding4Good. For each, I am constantly creating, modifying, curating, and sharing digital content across multiple social networks. My time is split between Marketing & Communications projects, but everything I do online is grounded in community building.

Our audience includes many people with print disabilities: blindness, visual impairments, dyslexia and other learning disabilities, and physical disabilities that interfere with reading printed material. So I have gained a lot of experience in online accessibility and am happy to discuss that with anyone who is interested.

I look forward to exploring, learning, and sharing with you!

Welcome Jane!

Love it when folks join us from Tech Clubs! The NYC group is great. I was following along during the last meeting via Twitter and Periscope.

Let us know if you have any questions.

Best,

My background is in digital marketing, and for the last 4 years I've been working with clients in a variety of industries on their email, social media, website, and onmi-channel content strategy. My specialty is email marketing, and I love sharing tips and best practices with marketers who want to take their digital campaigns to the next level. I currently work with some smaller non-profits in the Kansas City area, as well as a few national non-profits, and one in Ireland. Digital marketing strategy definitely differs based on your audience demographic, size, geographic range, etc.

I'd love to be a resource for anyone looking for tips, tricks, case studies, advice, or anything at all related to digital marketing. I'm an avid blogger and am trying to line up more speaking engagements and educational opportunities in 2016. Send me your questions, I'd love to share my Email Geek knowledge!! If I don't have the answer, I probably know the best resources to direct you to :)

I'm new to the NTEN Group as of January, and am excited to be attending the Conference in San Jose in a few short weeks as an exhibitor.

Hi Everyone!

I'm new to the group and will be attending NTC for the first time. Very excited!

I help nonprofits with their branding, marketing and graphic design. I've had my own business for over 10 years and prior to that I worked on staff at a nonprofit.

Happy to connect with you all!

Hi Folks!

I'm excited to join this community and NTEN as a new member! I work for Elefint Designs, a registered B Corp rooted in helping good causes with their brand and visual story-telling. A new project I'm working on is creating a digital annual report tool, and I'd love your feedback:

Every year most nonprofits have to produce an annual report. In response to this need, we created a digital annual report tool that makes it easy for good causes to create a more engaging, measurable, and cost-effective annual report to share with stakeholders.

You can check out the customizable tool here, and see the most recent example here

If you have a moment, do you mind answering a few questions to make sure that we are taking the right approach for your needs and budget? The survey is linked here and should only take 2-3 minutes.

Thanks so much, and I look forward to participating in the activity here!

Cheers,
Nicole

Hi, all! I am getting involved with NTEN and this community to find a community of nonprofit marcomm pros entrenched in digital communications. I spent the first half of my career working in large health nonprofits and then for myself as a consultant. I rejoined the "employee" world about 3 years ago, currently with a small corporate charity in Central Mass. I'm exciting to get "back in the game" and learn more from all of you and keep an ear out for new opportunities. Cheers!

Hi Cindy,

Welcome! This is a lovely and welcoming group (as you probably already know). I'm in Eastern Ma, working out of Waltham as a digital communications consultant (focusing on deepening engagement). If you find that you'll cross 495 into Eastern Mass, I'd love to find time to meet!

Best,
Debra

Welcome, Cindy!

I'm Sandee, an organizer of the Digital Communications CoP, and we're glad to have you join us! Like you, I've worked for a nonprofit (child services org) and as a consultant, which is what I'm doing currently. We'd love to hear more about your work and about how we can help you!

Welcome again, and it's great to have you here,

Sandee
