On lucky Friday the 13th, I'll be teaching a full-day cybersecurity class at the awesome Civic Hall in NYC. This is the third (3) time I'm teaching this as part of their Digital Learning Center. I'm updating a bunch of the curriculum to create more engagement opportunities for students, trying to make it as fun and interactive as it is content-packed.

If you're in NYC and want to get a one-day deep dive into cybersecurity fundamentals for organizations, I'd love to see you there.

All deets below and at link.

    --

    Challenge

Cybersecurity is a constant challenge for all organizations. Heck, just keeping up with the pace of technological change is a herculean task all by itself. People and organizations are faced with a virtual blizzard of new technology every day and, in trying to improve our organizations, we have to evaluate and adopt new technologies all the time. We must also think about how these changing technologies impact the security of our organization, our information, our clients, constituents and staff.

    Approach

This course will help students build a solid foundation for those looking to significantly improve their literacy around digital security. The course will focus on both strategy and tactics, helping students learn foundational security skills that will apply for years to come, while also delving into the specific tactics and tools that are most relevant today. Whether you are just starting on your cybersecurity career, looking to help make your organization more secure, or looking to develop literacy and skills around cybersecurity, this course is for you.

    What are the requirements?

Basic working knowledge of computers, networks and the Internet
Must be an employee of a nonprofit or social good organization
A desire to improve both personal and organizational cybersecurity
A laptop, smartphone and a Gmail account.
Advanced knowledge of Superstring theory (just kidding)
A spirit of adventure (not kidding)

What am I going to get from this course?

Understand the core principles of cybersecurity
Learn how social engineering (including phishing) work
Know the basic ten (10) steps to cybersecurity maturity for an organization
How to perform a high level cybersecurity risk assessment

    Who is the target audience?

IT professionals looking to develop cybersecurity skills
Nonprofit "Accidental Techies" looking to add "accidental cybersecurity ninja" to their skillset
Anyone interested in understanding and applying key cybersecurity principles

    Civic Hall

Based in NYC, Civic Hall is a non-profit collaboration space for the world's civic innovators interested in using technology for social good. We are a community of social entrepreneurs, change-makers, government employees, hackers, academics, journalists, and artists who share knowledge, build tools, and solve problems together. Civic Hall aims to be a safer, more inclusive space, and all Civic Hall members, staff, invited speakers, guests, and vendors visiting our space are expected to abide by our Code of Conduct.

On Tuesday, September 10 from 3 to 5 p.m. Eastern time, I'll be co-leading a discussion about content strategy: Gaining a Competitive Edge with Content Strategy. This is a free event - you can participate live in Washington, DC or virtually. Use the registration link below. It's put on by ACE (Associations Catalyzing Entrepreneurship). And while we'll be discussing associations, the conversation will be relevant to nonprofits or any content-rich organization.

What sets an association apart from the competition? In one word, CONTENT. Content goes way beyond newsletters, magazine articles, and blog posts. It spans all the work your association does - conferences, advocacy, white papers, website, courses, webinars, and more. An impactful content strategy can add member value, expand your influence, bust the internal silos, and help you achieve your business goals. But how do you develop - and implement - such a strategy? How do you get buy-in - from the top to the trenches? Join other association CEOs, COOs, and senior leaders for an open forum on content strategy.

The discussion will be led by Carri Hane, Dina Lewis, CAE, and me, the co-authors of the recent report Association Content Strategies for a Changing World.

    Hi all!

We are sponsoring an event with our client, National Community Capital (NCC), in New York on 9/26. We'll share how a customized Salesforce Community provided a dynamic space for collaboration and connections, powered by NCC's Salesforce data and how we designed the online space to complement their brand. Other ways a Community can be used include enabling constituent self-service with shared documents, Chatter, access to subject matter experts, and freeing up precious staff time by providing a secure channel for frequently asked questions.

The event will be at the Salesforce Tower in Bryant Park from 7:30 - 10:30 am and includes breakfast and nonprofit networking time. More info and free reg is on EventBrite.
